Neptune: Marine Seismic Navigation Software
(Licensed to Vision Project Services Group by Exploration Consultants Limited (ECL)
“Neptune” (which in the past has also been known as VisNav) was developed to enable interaction and analysis of Marine Seismic Navigation data with the conviction that this will allow us to offer a better service. “Neptune” was designed to provide the consultant with information about the data. The process of using “Neptune” will make the consultant better informed and will allow a clearer insight into the strengths and weaknesses of the navigation data systems, operation, acquisition and processing. It specifically utilises and verifies those data formats created for navigation data archiving and interchange.
In creating “Neptune”, ECL have avoided reproducing or emulating the acquisition or processing systems used by the contractors and have developed a tool which has very specific features required by a consultant. These features include:
- Portability – runs on a laptop computer and can be hand carried to the workplace by the consultant.
- Ease of configuration and installation - can be installed and set up within minutes.
- Comprehensive – has a wide range of tools, functions and features, which enable data evaluation, analysis and comparison.
- Ease of use - intuitive, easy to use and can provide information quickly allowing the consultant maximum time to interact with the navigation operation and the contractors crew.
- Graphical – “Neptune” utilises GIS and graphing techniques as well as tables of data for information output and interaction.
- Useful – “Neptune” is written to be part of the service provided. It is useful in the context of the work being done and all of the output is useful and meaningful.
- Fast – Very fast, built by people who know what they are doing and who understand the data.
- Expert software – software written by programmers with years of experience in software development and in positioning data, software that works properly.
- Report orientated – allows direct transfer of information between reports and documents created or stored on the computer system or network.
- Traceability – allows traceability and event tracking throughout the duration of a project or survey.
- Format verification and error reporting – allows fast and accurate pinpointing of any format and data errors, which will prevent input navigation data from reading correctly on a correctly configured computer system.
- Complete – Full network adjustment and P1 production.
- Proven track record – “Neptune” is developed and written by personnel with a strong background of software development and of providing consultancy services.
- Popular – “Neptune” is liked by both consultants and clients who have used it.
Application: “Neptune” can be used to evaluate marine navigation data and data formats on current data during a project or from historic data sets and to verify the integrity of their formats.
Project traceability is fundamental to the systems reporting structure and a project can be described as a single line, a subset of lines, a single survey or a group of surveys.
Support: “Neptune” is fully supported by those who design, write, manufacture and distribute it. Support extends to data problems, which can be analysed and results verified across the Internet as required and as part of the support service provided.
Cost: “Neptune” is a product that adds value to your data and to the service we provide.
System requirements: The more RAM, the faster the processor, the bigger the disk drive, the bigger the display, the better the performance! This is probably true of most software but with “Neptune” it will make a big difference. “Neptune” can be run on most MS-Windows or NT based computers, a typical laptop system would be a 500MHz processor, 128 MB of RAM and at least 4GB of disk space (navigation data files are large). Additionally your Input/Output requirements may need to be considered. How will data be supplied to you and what output will you have? Options typically include: Across a network, in which case a network connection, a network card and cables will be required. Via a magnetic tape in which case a suitable tape drive with a SCSI card and cable will be needed.
Geomatrix
This is a suite of useful Survey Tools, running in the Windows environment. It’s extensive Geodetic facilities can support a large number of Projections, such as UTM, TM, Mercator, Stereographic, Lambert 1 2 parallels, New Zealand, Rectified Skew Orthomorphic (RSO), Kavraisky, and Cassini-Soldner. It can support ALL worldwide Spheroids, and any Datum defined with 3, 5 or 7 parameter shifts. It will compute in any units, and will also compute Vertical Datum. It also contains a number of useful Marine calculations, such as tidal prediction and reduction, and several methods of computing Network adjustments.
GEOMATRIX runs on a Pentium platform and will generally be loaded on the Navigation QC Specialist’s notebook computer.
Geodetic Conversion Programs (Vision owned)
The Vision Group owns several different Geodetic Conversion Packages, which can be used for field geodesy, and surveying purposes.
