Quantify

Overview
QUANTIFY is offered by The Vision Group for post-project auditing, and checking of navigation, and positioning data.   It comprises a suite of software modules that range in function from auditing to reprocessing to mapping to archiving. The deliverable products may be accessed with standard “off the shelf” software applications.

Whenever dealing with a large data volume such as a 3D seismic survey, loading seismic tapes, examining shot point/file ranges, and compiling a list of lines present, missing, or potentially problematic are the normal front-end functions of a processing, reprocessing, archiving task. Quantify has proven that the positioning data set is an efficient means of cataloguing a seismic survey and improving the turn around time for a project.

Auditing & Archiving
The first process is essentially an audit that uses the positioning data set to describe the seismic
data set. The auditing process is essential for a good archive to be established. Ancillary data such as observer’s logs, positioning notes, post-plot maps and stacked data may be saved as graphic files. These files may then be linked to the line list for the data volume.

Verification, QC/QA, Fold Analysis
The verification procedure is a quality assurance task that examines the positioning files for irregularities. Noisy positioning, suspect geometry, gaps in the data, and missing shots may be identified. Mapping and fold analysis take a detailed look at how well the seismic data covers the survey area. This qualitative procedure may determine whether or not a vintage survey is a candidate for reprocessing.
More intensive quality assurance work may be conducted by using first break analysis to examine suspect areas. The verification process will point to problematic lines in the data volume to receive immediate attention versus detective work directed at an intermediate process, or worse, an attempt at a final product.

Reprocessing & Speciality Positioning Services
QUANTIFY has been used to produce input files for repopulating seismic headers with datum shifts and geometry corrections. Input and output formats may be user specified, seismic tape header dumps, or standard positioning formats. An important application is to dump seismic headers from tapes with little or no support data for an evaluation.
Enhanced seismic positioning (ESP), is a module of QUANTIFY. This product is used to adjust
marine source positions from the physical center of the source to the center of power. A recent project dealt with very elongate source geometry utilized in a multi-streamer configuration. The frequency content needed to image a shallow target was improved by adjusting the source positions in order to eliminate destructive phase differences caused by the source geometry.

What to Expect

  • A detailed line list for data handlers to use not develop
  • First look QC/QA for a heads up on problematic data
  • Capabilities for in depth analysis and reprocessing if required
  • An archive for a project on CD ROM that provides quick access to support data and saves storage space
  • Reduced turnaround time
  • Cost reductions by eliminating surprises and having to repeat a process

Deliverables (Example for a typical marine 3D survey):

  • CD ROMS (two copies) for the project containing:
    • Aerial coverage plots (two flex schemes)
    • Columnar coverage plots (one flex scheme)
    • Final report (if requested and provided by client)
    • Final P190 coordinates in local and second datum.P2/91s and or other raw data files and scanned OBs (if requested and provided by client)
    • Parameters, diagrams and line lists in Excel. spreadsheets

Additional Services

  • Processing raw positioning data into final navigation data
  • Building final positioning files from SEG external headers
  • Datum shifts carried out on standard SEG and UKOOA formats
  • Identifying essential and non-essential positioning data in storage
  • Reformatting and transcription.Forensic QC
  • Production of an audit spreadsheet that shows:
    • Line name
    • FSP and LSP
    • Direction number of calculated shots, missing shots
    • List of missing shots
    • Year, month, day, hour, minute, second
    • Link line name to jpeg files of logs to seismic field tapes and with processed data.
  • Production of a QC spreadsheet that quantifies:
    • Consistency with all positioning element intervals
    • Source and streamer separations
    • Streamer shaping/modeling
  • Production of tabular ASCII files that may be used to graph any problem areas.
